In a significant development, the universities and higher education institutions can now do admissions twice a year. There will be two admission cycles July-August and January-February from the 2024-25 academic session.

UGC chief Jagadeesh Kumar said that after the University Grants Commission approved the plan, Indian universities and higher education institutions will now be allowed to give admissions twice a year on the lines of foreign universities.

"If Indian universities can give admissions twice a year, it will benefit many students, such as those who miss out on taking admission in the July-August session due to delay in declaration of board results, health issues or personal reasons," Jagadeesh Kumar told PTI.

Half-yearly university admissions will help students stay motivated as they will not have to wait a full year for admission if they miss out on taking admission in the current cycle. With biannual admissions, industries can also recruit on their campuses twice a year, thereby increasing employment opportunities for graduates.

The UGC chief explained that biennial admissions will enable higher education institutions (HEIs) to plan their resource distribution, such as faculty, laboratories, classrooms and support services, more efficiently, resulting in better functional flow within the university.

"Universities across the world already follow the biennial admission system, if Indian higher education institutions adopt the biennial admission cycle, our higher education institutions can enhance their international collaborations and student exchanges. As a result, our global competitiveness will improve, and we will be at par with global educational standards," said Jagadeesh Kumar.
