The evaluation criteria this year has also been changed. The faculty to student ratio has been changed from 1:15 to 1:10 in medical institutes and increased from 1:15 to 1:20 in the state government universities.

The NIRF 2024 rankings has been published on the website https://www.nirfindia.org/. The top-ranking institutions have been categorised into 16 categories — overall, universities, medical, engineering, management, law, architecture, research institutions, colleges, pharmacy, dental, agriculture and allied sectors, state funded government universities, skill universities, open universities and innovation.

The NIRF was approved by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) and officially launched by the Minister of HRD on September 29, 2015.

The official site states, "This framework outlines a methodology to rank institutions across the country. The methodology draws from the overall recommendations and broad understanding arrived at by a Core Committee set up by MHRD to identify the broad parameters for ranking various universities and institutions. The parameters broadly cover 'Teaching, Learning and Resources,' 'Research and Professional Practices,' 'Graduation Outcomes,' 'Outreach and Inclusivity,' and 'Perception.'"

Major parameters

The NIRF rankings parameter include teaching, learning, resources, graduation outcomes, research, perception, outreach, and inclusivity. While the main parameters have remained the same since 2017, there have been some major changes in the sub-parameters. This year, each major institution will receive both an overall ranking and a discipline-specific ranking where applicable.

In the 'Universities' category, IISc Bengaluru topped the rankings, with Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in second place and Jamia Millia Islamia in third.
